Coxs Boatyard is delighted to announce their appointment as East Coast UK dealer for the MITEK range of electric outboard motors.
We were continually being asked about our electric propulsion recommendations so we conducted a series of tests across the current market offerings and were particularly impressed with the MITEK range of outboards. This Italian range featured excellent design and engineering solutions, especially the motor/drive system which allows bigger more powerful engines – up to equivalent of 30hp which is a very big electric outboard.
With this size it can go on the back of a rescue boat and push small boats on the plane.
In a world full of noise, pollution and environmental impact, electric outboards are currently seen as a perfect solution for exploring and patrolling the natural world of water that make up the Broads and Fens.
Nature reserves are for enjoying in all their natural glory – no pollution, minimal noise and disturbance and clean efficiency.
Cox’s has recently installed a number of MITEK electric outboards on boats working in an environmentally friendly environment with very positive feedback.
The electric motor, a synchronous brushless motor, fitted nicely under the cowling of the 9.9 hp engine. The metal outboard leg makes the whole package look very similar to a conventional combustion outboard.
As the electric motor is out of the water under the cowling it needs cooling, this is facilitated by pumping water up the leg around the motor and out in a telltale ‘jet’ the same as a conventional outboard.
The MITEK outboards come with either tiller handle or remote and we found the throttle response very smooth.
The electric outboards run on a 48-volt battery system, and we plugged the outboard into the batteries on board. With this system the batteries will be stored onboard and charged onboard through a charger. The electrical side of the package can be customised to the clients specification. There is a mobile App which comes with the outboard to monitor the battery usage and other information.
